Navigating change: MPX’s lessons from nature

This week’s article is a little bit different from our usual, but no less relevant. And it comes off the back of a conversation just this morning with our Operations Director, Simon.

You see, Si is one of those guys whose idea of enjoyment is getting pushed to the point where a bone could be broken or becoming temporarily unconscious is the norm. Of course, I’m talking about Jiu Jitsu.

We were discussing some new coaching techniques that Si has been trialling recently, and it’s all based around the difference between a rigid set of instructions and the idea of giving someone the tools to succeed, whilst allowing them to be responsive to whats in front of them.

Picture a marching band performing at half time during a big game - each individual member is giving a strict instruction to turn 90 degrees to the left when they reach the half way line. Now, poor old Michael has had a bad morning and at the half way line turns to the right, instead of the left. All of a sudden, everyone behind him is left confused as to which way they should have gone and there’s 10 seconds of chaos whilst the crowd is laughing at their expense.

Compare that against the last time you saw a flock of birds cruising overhead, their only task to follow the bird in front and keep at a healthy distance from the other birds surrounding. At the point in which the lead bird spots a danger ahead, it makes a slight change in direction to the left and all of a sudden, the whole flock looks as if it’s moved as one all at the same time - smoothly and gracefully.

Now, you’re probably wondering how that has any relevance to business systems and here’s why.

You see, most ‘off-the-shelf’ systems are rigid and offer very little flexibility to adapt to your business and any sharp divergence from the norm can quickly cause chaos. That’s not the case with MPX; We’ve got a great set-up straight off the shelf, however at the heart of MPX is the ability to shape the system to your exact needs and continuously react and adapt to your business as it changes and grows in real time - just like that flock of graceful birds.
